Why you Shouldn’t be Afraid of Pattern & Print Mixing: The Perfect Way to Experiment with Your Closet This Spring! Part 1

As someone who has a endless revolving color palette of neutral colors including blacks, greys, creams, and browns in her wardrobe, I figured since the curse on winter is nearly passed us here on the east coast, (fingers crossed) I should start pulling together some outfit trends that I have been eyeing for this upcoming spring season!

As the weather begins to warm up, most of us start to experience sheer excitement and motivation to pull ourselves up and out of winter’s hibernation. It is a time when you purge the old, tired, and warn in excange it for some of the major fashion trends of the year.

Bringing in the new equinox means that the days are longer and the sun is shining brighter! That transition within the solar system should also mean that the same transition should also be considered within your wardrobe as well. While my color palate revolves around neutral and rich dark colors, spring collections tend to assist me in leaning towards animated prints, cuts, patterns and colorful curated clothing compared to fabrics typically worn through fall and winter.

While there are many resources where you can search trends to try for 2019, lets start with the most common and simplest concept to liven up your closet-COLOR.

More specifically, color and print mixing!

Take a moment to think about what colors come to mind when you think of spring fashion? For me it includes various shades of purple, pink, red, green, yellow, and blue. These colors are actually the official colorway for 2019 spring/summer collection according to the NY Fashion Week’s Pantone color chart. With this in mind, I went to a couple of my favorite Goodwill Thrift Stores on the hunt for outfits to fit the occasion.

This will be part of a 3 part series so make sure you come back to keep reading & what looks I put together!

Look 1-Hip Hop & Rhythm & Blues

The first look I put together was a collaboration of 90’s Hip Hop & R&B mixed with the comfort of athleisure. I found these beautiful Adidas blue track pants in the men’s section when I was on my way out of the store. After one glance I knew they needed to be a major part of my spring/summer wardrobe! The colorway including a prominent white side paneling with black trim piping made it the perfect piece to mix and match with your favorite white tee or crop top.

I chose this striped cabbage trim crop top that I happened to score for less than $2! It was on sale for the color of the week (yes!) and already have ideas on to style it with other outfits. Pattern mixing like I’ve done here, is done very subtly and might I add, easily! And that is due to the colors contained within each piece. My track pants and top both include neutral colors and also happen to be of the same color (black & white). However, while I have stripes on the top, it is complimented by the solid color blocking from the pants below.

For shoes, I would have loved to find a nice pair of white chunky sneakers (preferably FILA’s Distrputor’s) to really make this outfit a throwback hit but, my nomad high-top canvas trainers from Bangs Shoes will do just fine! Despite my luck on finding my dream sneakers, I think the leather fanny pack really made up for it and really set the outfit off, making it all come together.

Stay tuned for my next couple posts where I show you more spring outfit inspiration and outfits I’ve put together for you!

In the meantime, what are some of your favorite spring trends you’re excited to try this season?

Good Luck-

xo,

Danielle

3 Ways You Can Style A Men’s Vintage Blazer to Fit Into Your Wardrobe!

Is it possible to find vintage pieces in the men’s section? Well, of course. But, if you are like me, majority of your clothing comes from the women’s and when concerning vintage pieces, the sizing can be a bit ‘off’ and can leave you discouraged. For me, I typically wear a size 8-10 in womens pants and a size M in tops. However, during my last thrift trip, I tried a number of sizes and nothing seemed to fit. Trying to keep it together inside was a struggle because I really thought I gained a bit of weight but knew that couldn’t be further from the truth; But that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t ready to give up!

In a recent post I shared in my last post about how I sourced my latest pair of vintage mom jeans  by checking out the men’s section. When you think of cute vintage pieces you can sometimes automatically think they are found in the women’s section. But just like the mom jeans I found, this beautiful houndstooth blazer was also in the men’s section and I was lucky to score it for just $7! I saw so much potential in how I could style it & knew I needed to make a video look book for you all!

Of the 3 looks I came up with on the fly, which outfit is your favorite?

My Trick to Finding the Best Pieces While Shopping- The Location will Shock You!

Would you believe this top is actually a size 2X?

Yeah…I couldn’t either!
⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s a pro tip: Scanning the return rack saves you 100% of the time and effort than searching the racks one by one. Items left on the ‘go back’ rack are items that have already been plucked because it caught someone’s attention and was worthy enough to try on. And if it caught their attention, it might catch yours as well! Scanning returns eliminates majority of the effort shopping requires, which to me, is a plus ’cause I like to work smarter not harder!

This method has done me well when I’m feeling overwhelmed and just aren’t having much luck. Keep in mind, this trick can work in a regular stores as well! Doing this has landed me this gem & so many others! I encourage you to try this out during your next shopping trip! 🤞🏽

Come To Work with Me: How I List Items to Sell on the Poshmark Selling App

If you have been following me and my blog for some time now, you know that I have created a hobby into a business by selling name brand trendy women’s & men’s clothing online with Poshmark.

Many you have left me wonderful compliments on how great I am doing and want to know my secrets. And while, I do not have any secrets to share, besides hard work, and persistence, I thought it would be fun to take you along with me on what I do in a day and show you my process on how I list on Poshmark!

Long story short, I have been a buyer since 2014 but, only recently a (part time) seller on Poshmark since August 2017! Within this short time I have sold $5,256 by finding thrift store treasures and flipping it into a secondary income. I hope that taking a peek into my progress will encourage you that a side hustle is always a possible means of having fun and of course, earning the extra cash you need!

Before we get started you’re going to need sign up for Poshmark. If you haven’t already, you can use my code “THREADLIFT” for a $5 code.

Source Quality Items:

Sounds simple enough right? Wrong! Knowing what brands to source is probably the hardest part about this process, and for good reason. Half of being able to earn money for the items you want to sell is also knowing the demand of your market. Are you selling women’s clothing? What are some popular brands that women are buying right now? What trends are in? What season is it? There are many variables to understand but here are some of my favorite Poshmark resellers that I have learned alot from in my journey! Their Youtube channels have helped me learn what to buy and what to price it for in my early reselling days.

Prep, Steam, Stage:

After sourcing the items I want to sell within my closet, it’s time to make them look presentable. Think about how you feel when you shop online; what are you most attracted to? If you could compare a wrinkle free top that was nicely displayed on a mannequin vs. the same top, full of wrinkles and draped on the side of someone’s bed, which one would you be more interested in? Right- so keeping that in mind; remember what goes through a customer’s mind when they step into your closet. Take a look at how I stage my closet by visiting my Poshmark Closet. Often times I opt for a bright or warm tone flat lay for my cover shot while including diverse ways of listing by showing the item displayed in a multitude of ways.

Photograph your Items:

Probably the next and most important step in this process is creating your image! While you do not need the most expensive camera, lighting kits or editing tools, consideration of how your photography is still very important. My favorite time to take photos is in natural light, which is typically found to be the best in the middle of the day around 1-3 PM. Considering that it is currently winter, timing will be everything with the shortened days and longer nights.  If you own a smartphone, you have a special advantage of using editing tools for your photos. Most smartphones come with the ability to apply a default filter and adjust the lighting, exposure, contrast, etc. allowing you to make the best of your photo without too much effort!

Tip: If you are using your phone, take your pictures in square mode…I made this mistake and some of my images are cut off because I shot in vertical originally (ugh).

Upload to Poshmark:

My favorite step! Now that you have your item photographed, its time to upload it to the Poshmark platform. Poshmark allows you to upload 8 photos to showcase your items, so more is better! When choosing what photos to upload, I make sure to get a picture of the front of the item, back, close up of the brand label and size, garment care tag, length and width (tops) and waist measurements/ inseam measurement (pants).

After uploading your photos, next is to describe, describe, describe! Be as descriptive as possible in your listings. Are there any flaws? Make sure you also describe those for transparency to avoid confusion for your buyer in order to make a quicker sale!

Share, Share, SHARE:

I seriously cannot stress this enough. The purpose of Poshmark is to SHARE your closet with the community. After you have uploaded your image, you must be sure to continuously share that item to the news feed to give it exposure. The more consistent you do this, the greater the chances your items will sell —and fast! What’s better, is that other Poshers will share you items for you to their followers which will give you even MORE exposure. When someone does this for you, always return the favor and then pay it forward to someone else’s closet! Before you know it, you’ve already made your first sale!

I hope these tips encouraged you to start your own Poshmark closet! With the new year starting fresh, you have the best opportunity right now to clean out your closet and get your feet wet in the reselling side of fashion!

Good Luck,

xo

Fashion, Lifestyle, Work Uniform Challenge Aug 2018

Why Creating a Signature Work Uniform Can Increase Your Self Esteem (August Challenge

If you were ever part of a club or team for your extracurricular activities while growing up than you might remember the importance of unity in the sense of working together. The idea of community taught us the importance of caring for humankind as well as the basics of tying a spider knot into a piece of rope. For a good chunk of my childhood, I was in Girl Scouts. From what I remember of that time is that community was represented through small acts of compassion that was the metaphorical glue that held our society together; and that was represented all the way down to the green vest & hat I wore.

Thinking back on that as an adult, has me questioning if those silly uniforms actually carried a cognitive benefit in the effort to build confidence by placing less importance on what I looked like on the outside versus who I illustrated myself to be. This made me think- should I consider creating a work uniform as an effort to improve my performance at the office? Is it really possible to remain confident in oneself by wearing the same outfit every day, week after  week? A bit of background, I work as a government contractor as an data analysts, so my work involves a lot of data mining while in the setting of a cube farm (think beige color walls and floors).

The challenge I am creating for myself during the month of August is to create a personal work uniform to wear to the office for the full 31 days. Now, let me tell you, there is no greater fear than looking at your closet and saying, “Why can’t I find anything to wear?” Or preparing your outfits the night before just to change it completely the next morning. So I am excited to leave that worry behind.

My choice in styling the uniform will be versatile enough that it will fit the office’s business casual environment, while also providing me warmth throughout the day (the office can be an ice box). The pieces will be transitional in case special occasions after work arise where I need to attend that I can quickly pair with a few accessories. My goal is to eliminate the daily (routine) anxiety of pulling something to wear and wondering “does this match?” Choosing a style that flatters me will ease any other doubts in my head that people might notice my outfits and think that I’m lazy, but if you think about it; creating a work uniform will put me in the ranks of some of the most successful people including, Barack Obama, Mark Zutherburg, and Steve Jobs!

With that in mind, I hopped over to my favorite store, Old Navy  where I was sure to find items that fit my tall physic and would get me an incredible sale. What I found was a lightweight popover cotton striped tunic and my favorite skinny leg Pixie pants. This challenge is only lasting for the month, one pair of pants and 4 tops would do the trick since I am technically in the office Monday-Thursday (I tel-work from home on Friday’s). As you can see from image below, I am already off to a good start with my wardrobe with a savings of $72.03 dollars! That’s about an average of $2.30 per day over the span of 31 days for my work attire. I plan to wear my favorite black loafers from Crown Vintage and a simple black blazer from my closet to keep me warm.

wardrobe uniform

Might I add, that I will still have the benefit of retaining the rest of my wardrobe and allowing creative expression on the weekends, because a girl’s gotta show off her ass-sets!

“The whole idea of uniformity is adopting a uniform for yourself, as it keeps things very simple”, said Thom Browne, Fashion Designer. I am excited to adventure to a new level of self-confidence and truly owning my sense of style and project that image to those around me by shifting the focus on what I’m saying and not what I’m wearing. Following the steps of a local DC women in my area, Renata Briggman who effortlessly wore the same blazer, slacks, top, shoes every.single.day for an entire year, I think this should be an exciting month!

I will be sure to document this series for you all during the month of August and will do a recap post in September!

What would your summer work uniform look like? Comment below your thoughts and if you’re willing to join me this month for the challenge!

xoxo,

Danielle
