One Summer Trend I Am Not Ready To Let Go of This Fall

“Bring on the sweater weather” I exclaimed!

On September 23rd, 2019 I was, like most people, ready for fall to roll around. Fall has a beautiful appeal to it. The cooler weather, comfort foods, the natural changing colors of nature around you can easily evoke feelings of nostalgia and comfort.

However, this year was a bit different. What changed? Well, actually it all comes down to this very unique purchase I made from my local D.C. Goodwill that made me miss the occasional blistering days of summer. I will start off to say that I do not play into fashion rules, as they are a bit restricting. Besides, I like to think that fashion has no rules to follow. Each of us have an internal desire to express ourselves and what role we play in the world. So, what an easier way to do that than by expressing that through the clothes we choose to wear?

Rules such as no white after Labor day or to someone’s wedding, show less leg & cleavage for modesty, and my all time favorite, tall girls shouldn’t wear heels are rules that are at this point laughable. As restricting as they may seem, there is still one that I even found myself contemplating and that is, “should I continue wearing linen in the fall”?

This question, normally something that I would never ask myself but, when I came across this beautiful piece from Zara, I instantly knew it was special. Lately, I have been obsessively checking Pinterest and Youtube to make sure that I am up to date on all the latest fashion trends for fall and have created quite the vision board for the upcoming season. So far my color palette has surrounded around nudes, neutrals, textures, and versatile patterns. However, when I caught the eye of this top, it reminded me that its possible to blend the two wonderful seasons together through the wonderfulness that is  linen fabric.

As you may have experienced, early fall days seem to resemble much of summer (at least in the afternoon) when the sun comes to its highest point and that cozy sweater in the mornings becomes a furnace with sleeves. And because of that, I found that this piece is perfect because of a.) its breathability within the fabric, b.) its natural brown hue and of course c.) its versatility to be paired with so much already in my closet!

The top has a beautiful deep v along with a predetermined wrap detail attached creating the perfect syncing to your waist, creating the perfect silhouette to any frame. Although this top is an extra large, the natural belting detail constructed into the top compensates for it being a size too big for me normally. Here I decided to pair them with my slightly distressed boyfriend denim jeans with raw hem along with my new favorite kitten block animal print heels; because you aren’t doing fall right if you don’t have at least one animal print in each of your outfits 😉

What are some summer pieces that you want to style into the summer-fall transition season?

DIY Home Makeover: How to Build a Gallery Wall!

*Collaborative post

With spring in the air, many people tend to equate the changing of seasons with the physical act of replacing their winter wardrobes with their spring. However, there are so many other ways you can channel that energy! I thought I should take a moment to  reevaluate my living spaces and see what improvements could use a bit of a pick-me-up. After looking around on Pintrest and Instagram, I decided upon the idea to create a gallery wall. The concept is very easy to create, budget friendly, and if you rent an apartment space like me, you know that leading with creativity might not always fit the rules you landlord has set in place. Thankfully, this DIY is guaranteed to meet your expectations and won’t damage your walls too much in the process!

You don’t need to watch too many episodes of Property Brothers or Queer Eye to understand that speaking from a design perspective, creating a gallery wall has the ability to instantly elevate any space with personalized style. Using your favorite prints and art pieces of various sizes, shapes, and colors gives you the opportunity to create a gorgeous gallery that gives your guests a chance to get to know who you are, through photos.

So let’s get started!

Pick Your Frames

While this project is fairly simple, there still needs to be thought put into the assembly of it. As I got started, I thought about what color scheme I wanted to work with, which wall I wanted to use, and what theme my prints would represent. If you’re indecisive like me, take down your thoughts on pen & paper to sort out the many ideas you have floating in your head.

Next, search for your desired frames. This is one of the more important steps in the process because your frames will set the tone of your gallery. Do you want thick frames, thin? Are they square, rounded, oblong? Also think about what colors they will be. Since  this is a spring transition, think about what colors inspire you for the season. In addition, think about the space you are working with. What color are your walls and the surrounding areas (carpet, furniture). If you are working with a classic white background, than almost any color will compliment it. However, if you have painted walls like me, think about which shades of frames will compliment them and make it really stand out within your space!

It’s Hammer Time- What You’ll Need

As far as tools go, here’s what you’ll need to create the gallery wall of your dreams…

  1. Picture Frames
  2. Hammer or Scotch Hanging Strips
  3. Nails
  4. Leveler (if you don’t have one, you can download on right to your phone!)
  5. Pencil & Paper
  6. Small Notebook
  7. Extra nails and screws
  8. And a good playlist going to keep the inspiration flowing

Pick Your Prints

Ok- now THIS is the fun part! As I mentioned above, if you want to add some cohesiveness to your gallery, make sure you are combining similar frame shapes and complimentary colors. This includes what images you choose for your prints! For example, your gallery could consist primary of people, animals, places you’ve visited, or inspirational quotes; but don’t feel like you should limit yourself. The most important thing is for your wall to represent you- your tastes, history, and what you  love the most. I sourced by prints via Etsy, but there are thousands of prints you can print for free and affordably from Google, Canva and Unsplash by simply searching images according to the theme you want to achieve.

Lay It Out

From a designers perspective, it comes recommended that you first measure the amount of wall space you want to fill and then tape off that section on a clean floor. This process allows you to space everything out the way you want in advance allowing you to save time and (let’s face it) disappointment of securing it on the wall and not exactly enjoying your results. And not to mention, avoiding unnecessary damages to your wall. Once you lock down your favorite arrangement, take a few photos on your phone and compare layouts. Use your photos as reference when you’re hanging as a guide to go back to as you begin hanging.

Hang In There

Now it’s time to get that art onto the wall! Starting small in this case is not recommended. As a matter of fact, starting with the largest frame will help you visualize how to place the others around it. Placing your larger piece a bit of centered won’t allow it to steal the show, but rather, will allow you to build the smaller pieces around it. Hanging is more of a building framework that yields positive results from the top down. Remember to refer to the photos of the layout options you took on your phone and feel free to move some pieces around as you begin to hang them; remember you are not committed to one idea, this is YOUR wall.

I hope these tips helped you become inspired to create your own gallery wall & revamp up your space!

Good Luck,

Danielle

My Trick to Finding the Best Pieces While Shopping- The Location will Shock You!

Would you believe this top is actually a size 2X?

Yeah…I couldn’t either!
⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s a pro tip: Scanning the return rack saves you 100% of the time and effort than searching the racks one by one. Items left on the ‘go back’ rack are items that have already been plucked because it caught someone’s attention and was worthy enough to try on. And if it caught their attention, it might catch yours as well! Scanning returns eliminates majority of the effort shopping requires, which to me, is a plus ’cause I like to work smarter not harder!

This method has done me well when I’m feeling overwhelmed and just aren’t having much luck. Keep in mind, this trick can work in a regular stores as well! Doing this has landed me this gem & so many others! I encourage you to try this out during your next shopping trip! 🤞🏽

My #1 Pro Tip when Shopping Secondhand! Learn How I Scored My Favorite Wardrobe Pieces

Shopping at the thrift store can be overwhelming and it’s hard to decide where to start first. With so many options for clothing, accessories, jewelry, shoes, home décor it’s hard to know where to begin looking!

As a seasoned thrifter, I can still relate to this feeling new or casual thrifters may experience. I tend to get overwhelmed when I am shopping at a new store and not sure of how the layout works and what the culture of the shoppers is like.

Whatever the case may be, I have stuck with one sold tried and true tip when it comes to thrift shopping. and that is to make sure you shop the entire store! Now, if time is not on your side or you’re tired, hungry, or just not feeling it that day- then this tip may be a hard one to follow through. But, if you can counter those feelings by preparing ahead of time, shopping all corners of the store, while sometimes tedious, have delivered amazing results during many trips without fail!

How does shopping the entire store work for you? You might be skeptical as to why this is my favorite tip but, you might be surprised to know that about 50% of my favorite finds were discovered in sections where I least expected them. I typically wear a size M-L top, size 8 dress, and size 30 jeans. But, one of my recent finds, a organic cotton J. Jill button up floral top (pictured) was found in a size I would never typically to shop from.

This top is actually a size 1X. Yes! But, looking at how I styled it, you probably would never have thought of that right? And furthermore, you would never expect me to find something in that size that looks good on someone with my physique. With that said, you might wonder how many items YOU have passed up simply because you limited yourself to specific sections of the store.

What you need to understand is that the fun found from thrifting comes not only with shopping discounted prices but, also finding hidden gems in all corners of the store. I’ve found my favorite pair of Chuck Taylors in the men’s section and some unique tee shirts in the boy’s section simply because I looked for them and stretched the boarders of my imagination on how to incorporate them into  my wardrobe.

The next time you are out shopping try wandering over to the men’s section and browsing for a bit. My recommendations are to shop outerwear (jackets), sweaters, tees and shoes first. They are usually easier to style and are for the most part, unisex!

Good Luck,

Danielle

10×10 Closet Challenge or Capsule Wardrobe? Which Style Approach Should you Bring to your Closet this Fall & Winter Season?

Now that fall is officially among us, the urges to purchase new clothing items are on every fashionistas brain. “If I only just had THIS sweater in THIS color my fall wardrobe would be complete!”

And while shopping for a few things here and there to add to your existing wardrobe is completely healthy, the underling problem many of us will face is buying in excess and not acquiring only those items that we actually need.

If you scroll through the feed of your favorite fashion blogger(s) you might begin to see repeating hashtags like #10x10challenge and #capsulewardrobe but what is the difference and why is everyone onboard to this fashion bus that I never knew existed. And wait- should I get onboard too?

The answer might actually surprise you; because this time I would say it’s better to follow that crowd on this one.

-Stay with me here-

Check out fashion pieces you need to slay the summer to fall season transition!

10×10 CHALLENGE

Let’s look at both of these wardrobe concepts and their purposes. Starting with 10×10 Challenge. This challenge begin around 2015 with the concept to help encourage creator (Style Bee) to get more creative with her clothes during a 30 Day Shopping Fast. The concept is essentially a micro capsule closet of 10 items that you work with for 10 days, trying new looks and styling your clothes in ways you might not otherwise try! Below is a formula for how beginners can adjust their wardrobe to start the challenge for themselves!

BEGINNER’S FORMULA FOR 10×10 CHALLENGE

  • 2 Pairs of Shoes (1 heel + 1 flat)
  • 4 Tops (Consider pieces that layer well like a fitted long-sleeve, a button-down and a cardigan)
  • 1 Dress
  • 2 Bottoms
  • 1 Top Layer

A few other tips for choosing items:

  1. Check the forecast and pick practical items for the weather.
  2. Don’t give yourself too much time to choose. Try to make the call in under 30 minutes.
  3. Go for an easy, lean or neutral color palette. Think creams, browns, denim, white, black and grey.
  4. Reach for your favorites first and then add one or two pieces you’d like to wear more or aren’t sure about.
  5. Avoid Dry Clean Only items or pieces that are a pain to launder so if need be you can refresh them during the 10 days.
  6. Any accessories or jewelry you add to a look does not count as a part of your 10 items. For example:
    • Hats
    • Bags
    • Scarves
    • Necklaces
    • Gloves
    • Jewelry

SUMMARY: The current 10×10 Challenge officially began on Instagram on October 22, 2018 and will last for 10 days! If you are looking to bring creativity to your wardrobe by placing a number on the limit of items to work with, this challenge is best suited for you! There is a possibility to mix and match outfits that you may have never thought of because you had an abundance of options. This concept I think is better for those who enjoy a strict challenge that disciplines their creativity to work with pieces they already own. Search the #10x10challange for outfit inspiration and start posting today! Challenge ends on October 31!

The Capsule Wardrobe

Now, let’s look at the idea of creating a #capsulewardbrobe. Contrary to the 10x10challanege creating a capsule wardrobe involves gathering a greater number of clothing items that either already exist within your wardrobe or are sourced new (or thrifted). While keeping a minimalist ideology, capsule wardrobes essentially create a “mini-wardrobe” made up of really versatile pieces that you totally love to wear. Each season (spring, summer, fall, and winter), you clear your closet except for a set number of pieces that encompass your capsule wardrobe. The aggregate number between bloggers seem to fall somewhere around 25-40 items, but that number can vary by season and individual personalities.

HOW TO START YOUR OWN

1. Pair down your closet to 25-40 items. (try not to focus too much on hitting a number if you have more pieces that you love in your closet)

2. Wear only those 25-40 items for three months.

3. Don’t go shopping during the season until…

4. The last two weeks of the season, reevaluate your current capsule and shop for your next capsule season.

5. The amount you buy for the next capsule is up to you, but less is more!

SUMMARY: Capsule wardrobes allow for a greater range of pairings and opportunities to mix and match items you already own and love in your closet as well as the flexibility to purchase items once per season to add to your rotation. Similar to the 10x10challange, capsule wardrobes enforce the idea of creativity and challenges you to find your true style instead of following each fast fashion trend as it comes and goes. I have created a capsule wardrobe of my own for fall and am having the most fun in seeing what outfits I can come up with each day! So much so, I have encouraged my boyfriend to transform his wardrobe and try it out for himself!

Search the hashtag #capsulewardrobe on Instagram and Pinterest for outfit inspiration and start posting some of your favorite fall outfits!

Which challenge are you eager to try?

Good Luck,

Danielle
