Are You Overlooking the Most Important Essential Accessory at Goodwill?

After years of thrift shopping, I have scored a lot of finds that I am always happy to share with you all. But, when I’m not shopping, I dedicate that time to let my wallet catch a breath while I live vicariously and enjoy a few thrift hauls with some of my favorite YouTube channels. Those that I follow always have a great perspective on what items to look for, how to style their finds while in store and by the end of their video, I’ve put a few new tricks in my back pocket and walk away with inspiration for my next trip.

However, one thing I’ve noticed is the lack of accessories that are highlighted in many thrift hauls. And by accessories, I am speaking about jewelry.

A question for you, What do you think about the idea of purchasing jewelry from second hand stores? For me, I have a guilty confession of purchasing many accessories from fast fashion companies like H&M, Target and Forever 21. Mostly because of the affordability, accessibility in finding pieces that are on trend and the ease of finding an abundance of these types of stores instead of looking for a thrift stores in the immediate area.

After thinking about why my shopping mentally is this way, I’ve deducted that the structure of most thrift stores sometimes easily allow for jewelry to be overlooked. As an avid thriftier, I find that I like to take my time when shopping. Maybe for obvious reasons- but, in most thrift stores, the jewelry and other accessories are behind glass casings, inaccessible for close examination or require assistance from a employee. So by the time I make it to the register, that is when I notice the jewelry; but its too late.

What deters me from making a purchase is a variant of things like, there are time constraints and I need to check out as soon as possible, budget, or to be frank, I am fatigued from shopping the whole store!

With that said, I want to make it more of a conscious effort to start there first, ensuring that I can take a few goodies home with me. As someone who purchases most of her clothing secondhand, the idea of buying jewelry is a no brainer. However, I’ve noticed that I hardly talk about the items that I’ve picked up overtime while shopping. So, I thought for this post I would show you a few of the jewelry items I’ve that I am currently obsessed with and have worn the most.

*Not all these items were purchased at the same store or purchased at the same time.

Nautical Wheel Earrings

I actually found these while traveling in Puerto Rico at a secondhand store! I figured since I was on an island, surrounded by beautiful water, these earrings were an essential to pick up! Since then, everytime I wear these I think of the beauty of Puerto Rico and the memories I made there. I scored these for under $5.

Aztec Circle Engraved Earrings

These cuties were picked up during my last thrift tour in Washington, D.C. (recap post coming soon). I found these for $1 while waiting in a long line to to check out. I love the fun print on them that are oh so subtle but, still bold enough to make a statement.

Flower Fields Earrings

I have a thing for earrings, can’t you tell? I have tiny ears so, I love to add to them to make them appear larger (lol) These are my first pair of vintage clip-on style earrings. Unlike the typical clip-on’s, they actually screw-on. I had never seen anything like this and was amazed about how comfortable they actually are! With such a contraption, I was not expecting to last too long in them- a pleasant surprise to say the least! I picked these up for less than $3.

What are some of your favorite second hand jewelry pieces you’ve collected so far?

How I Flawlessly Crushed My First Brand Collaboration with Savers Super Thrift Store! (Checking Off My NYE Resolution!)

One of the many New Year’s Resolutions I created for myself (none involving the gym) centered around the idea that I would muster the courage to conduct my first brand event with the community. Sounds simple, right? For a while I teetered on the idea of participating as a booth vendor with a larger organizer (which I did) in an effort to connect who I am, my message, and my passion for thrifting. And while that experience was a success, I wanted hold something independent that really showcased my passions and produce something that was mine.

So, I reached out to several thrift stores, many of which are large corporations with established household names that many people would recognize. After narrowing down my list of who I wanted to work with, I drafted several emails, and carefully outlined my intentions with a proposal to schedule a time to hold an in-person meeting.

I appropriately titled my event, Thrift & Brunch with Thread Lift, creating my call to action to provide brunch fare options (fruits & veggies, coffee & tea) provide facts about Savers and the art of thrifting, and educate customers along their shopping journey for any questions they have.

Of the handful of store managers I reached out to, only one store responded. Yep-one, but thankfully, one is all you need to get your foot in the door, and this store happened to be the store I wanted to collaborate with the most; The store manager of Savers Thrift was intrigued to hear how my ideas would increase traffic to the store and spread the Savers mission throughout the surrounding community.

With their approval- I got to work! I’m talking, creating an Eventbrite promotion page, sending individual email invitations, creating and distributing marketing materials, and building a social media following leading up to the event- GIRL… it was tough.

Wait, did I mention, I’m holding down a full-time job in the midst of all this? Oh yea, this was done during my “free time“. This was my first self-made event I was leading and organizing entirely on my own; and I felt every moment of it.

Leading up to the event, orders for tickets rolled in, and somehow the event sold out! (I’m still surprised). The evening before my event had consisted of “what if” scenarios running through my mind, but I braced myself for whatever to come.

But just as fate, the universe, and the sphinx on the hill would have it, a couple of volunteers who were set to assist me, cancelled day of the event (via text message). While that realization stung to read (it was the first thing I saw when I woke up) I knew that I had prepared for this, and realized that you can only truly depend on YOU. The voices of my late grandmother rang in my ear, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. With that in mind, I was ready for anything…BRING IT ON!

Nothing but smiles were to be had throughout the event! The Savers staff were attentive and generous people who assisted me and the attendees with all of our needs. The event brought in a significant amount of new traffic as I delivered new insights to the idea of secondhand shopping with local thrift stores in an effort to live on a budget and to improve the condition of our planet, together.

I followed up with the manager a few days after the event to provide feedback. It was reported that two guests who attended the event joined the Savers rewards programs and spent a combined of $300 during their trip! In addition, I was offered to collaborate in a future event with the store in just a few months- and I honestly cannot wait to do it all over again!

Tips to Keep In Your Back Pocket To Make Sure Your Next Thrift Adventure is a Success!

I thought I would share some of my favorite thrifting tips to you the next time you are out hunting! Enjoy!

5 Savvy Tips to Keep in Your Back Pocket for a Day Thrifting:

  • Research the trends: Typically, I always have an idea of what I am looking for when I walk into the store. To prepare, do your own research and gather inspiration from latest fashion blogs, magazines, or browse Pinterest for the latest trends!
  • Make a list: If you’re like me, your mental calendar is a little unreliable sometimes, so write your ideas down! Get a strategy of items that are must haves to pick up during your trip- you’ll save yourself the headache of trying to decide at the register when it’s finally time to check out!
  • Keep it simple!: I cannot stress this enough- Trust me, dressing for success while shopping includes wearing a loose fitting top, flat shoes, and bottoms you can easily get in and out off will keep you comfortable while browsing the isles & in the fitting rooms.
  • Patience, is a virtue: Sometimes the perfect find takes time, so thrift often! Best times to shop are post-holiday and spring cleaning for incredible inventory options!
  • HAVE FUN! Always remember to have fun with your style and during thrifting. Don’t be afraid to take those risks without going broke during your trip!

BONUS Tip:

  • I love to start in the same section every thrift trip. Mine happens to be shoes or dress. I normally have the most energy when I begin shopping which is perfect since these sections can get pretty crowded!

How Spending $30 Shopping Secondhand Made me $100 in one Week

If you clicked on this post and thought that I may have performed a magic trick — keep reading. Unfortunately, their wont be any mentions of “Abracadabra” or pulling rabbits from a top hat, but there is the fact that I seamlessly turned $30 into $100 in a week without breaking a sweat!

What’s the secret?  Well, if you have not caught on by now, I am a HUGE fan of secondhand shopping and even better, reselling on social platforms like Poshmark and eBay. For this post, I will be focusing on how I successfully flipped a pair of brand new Allen Iverson’s into cash after stumbling across them at the thrift store a few weeks ago.

A little tip about your girl is that I AM NOT A SNEAKER HEAD. I literally know nothing about sneaker trends, styles, color way, anything that the cool kids are wearing on their feet these days. However, when I saw this particular pair of shoes, that little voice in my head said, “What ARE those?!”. Turns out they were a unicorn find of Reebok Classics Collaboration with Allen Iverson x Melody Ehsani, Question Mid X. Originally released in 2016 — a collaboration with designer-retailer Melody Ehsani that nods to his rebellious spirit are exclusively made for women. Props Allen!

After pulling a quick poll on my Instagram Stories, I reached out to the reselling community and friends to survey if I should keep or pass (with the idea that I would sell) After a bit of conversation, I decided to pull the trigger and purchase despite some friends expressing their opinions and declared how ugly they were, out of style, and just plain “wack” (lol).

Instagram Poll

That evening, I decided to do some more research on these shoes, because at this point I am obsessed with these shoes (naturally). And to my surprise, they were:

1. A RARE find. It was a bit difficult to find comparisons with similar items sold in this color way.

2. The profit margins were everywhere! Sold shoes in new condition ranged from $90-$130.

With that in mind, I decided to hedge my bets and go to Poshmark & eBay to list these babies! My heart was racing as I took the photos. In my best effort to capture the perfect lighting, and angle. I finally selected 8 of the best pictures and posted my listing with a starting price of $125 (to allow for wiggle room to land the price I want).

I waited eagerly staring at the screen for a new notification with an offer from a buyer, any buyer, I couldn’t wait to flip these puppies! After about 2 days of being listed, offers started to roll in. LOW BALL offers (drat!) (eye roll) (scuff). I politely counter offered to those users (I don’t believe in declining any offer) who turns away from money!? Not me!

A few more days rolled by and I am still just as bright-eyed as Day 1. And there it was an offer from a buyer for $100. I didn’t want to accept it right away and seem to eager or thirsty. After about 5 minutes (so patient, right?) I couldn’t take the anticipation anymore and hit accept. It was done! And to think, just few days before, I was purchasing these shoes for just $30 and was able to flip them for nearly 4x the amount.

Flipped!

After this flip, things shifted in the thrift universe for me as I began to experience a lucky streak by finding brands that I’ve had on my wish list for months. Pieces that are quality and in demand brands to resell! There is definitely a lesson here— you can find creative ways to make money to use as disposable income or to support yourself as long as you are willing to do the work to make it happen!
