While I am in love with being a content creator (blogger and aspiring vlogger) the truth is, your girl is not getting rich off either of these hobbies at the moment. I hold a full-time 9-5 throughout the week that is my primary source of income and leave the content creation for after work and on the weekends. Now, to supplement that, I have dabbled in the art of reselling women’s apparel on popular sites such as Poshmark and eBay.
I began my journey as a part-time seller in October 2017 and haven’t looked back since. The first item I sold was a pair of maroon textured riding boots from Target, new in box for $18. Looking back on that now, I definitely could have squeezed a little more given the condition and season they were sold in— but it was exhilarating! I wanted to do it again and again, cause who doesn’t want to earn a bit of cash for the things they don’t want?
And so it began. I began to post more online and shortly was gaining a following! Fast forward to present day, summer 2018 and I’ve expanded on my brand and my closet by bringing it to life online through photo and video.
But, there’s one problem, while I am gaining followers (about 100 a day) my sales aren’t reflecting that. In the retail world some would call it the “summer slowdown” and it’s perfectly normal. Summer is a time where customers are buying flights and vacation packages and not spending that much time buying clothing. So what am I left to do…? My side gig is looking like a choke sammich over there and I HAVE BEACHES TO BE ON! Where oh where has my disposable cash gone?!
Instead of getting down on myself, I decided to do some reflection on my closet. What can I do to revamp what I have already without going to the thrift store and buying more clothing? I took a step out of the box and came up with these tips to help refocus my store in preparation for the uptick in sales that I am anticipating for the fall season:
Enjoy the summer! Take advantage of the summer slowdown and bring your brand to life on social media. Post pictures of your beautiful flat lays, include a few pictures of yourself at work behind the scenes, and wear your clothing in your posts; be sure to tag relevant people/brands to snag their attention! It’s a great way to gain a new following on other platforms that will most likely follow you over to Posh for a sale!
Review your closet! If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Take a look at what you have in your closet for sale. Could you make your photos more attractive? What about styling your pieces together so customers can purchase multiple items from your store? Is this item on trend and in demand?
All questions to ask yourself before running out to buy.
Use your hiatus as a method to build anticipation! You ever wonder why Nike Jordan shoes always have lines out the door just before they drop a new release? Well, for one… they’re Nike, but they didn’t always have that reputation. Coupling quality products that customers want with limited product stock can actually build anticipation.
Read that last sentence again…
If customers are constantly returning to your store to buy from you, take note and make it work to your advantage. Try promoting bi-weekly releases of curated styles based on previous sales.
I believe this is a great marketing technique and have a few ideas on how I would like to manage it for myself!
Come back stronger than ever! Bored with your store’s appearance? Change it— Bored with the brands your selling? —Source new ones. If you’ve experienced the summer slowdown like I have, make some extra time to work behind the scenes to make your store work for you so when you are ready you’ll not only impress your returning customers, but may also attract a new following! Soon enough you’ll be back on track.
For me, I have one more beach trip to squeeze in before summer is over.
